Last Minute July 4th Projects: Five fun, free and festive online ideas

Are you inspired by the combination of red, white and blue and motivated to do some festive July 4th holiday creating? You don’t need to look any further than your internet browser to find an abundance of free and festive ideas. Since the safe thing to do these days is to stick close to home, I’ll be spending most of the holiday weekend cooking and quilting. And, since times are also a bit lean, I found five great FREE projects from generous and talented designers. Here are my suggestions, let me know if you wind up picking one or two to sew this weekend.

Olde Glory by Temecula Quilt Company

Okay, I already finished this one but it’s one of my favorite small quilts. I love Americana and a flag on anything makes it special. Measure, cut and sew carefully when doing the red and white stripes on the flag. That part is a little tricky. Otherwise, it’s a simple and striking quilt that will add to any Independence Day holiday decor.

Stripes and Stars by Moda

This post from the Moda blog has patterns for two different pillows but the long one with stripes and one star is my favorite. This will be an easy pillow to make from my stash. I’ll probably only finish one this weekend but it will be fun to add more when the other red, white and blue holidays roll around and soon I’ll have a very patriotic sofa.

Flying Free Wall-hanging by Laurie Simpson at All People Quilt

Okay, maybe this project isn’t one that can be done in a weekend. But, I just had to include a pattern from Laurie Simpson of Minick and Simpson because their pattern and fabric designs are quintessential Americana. Seeing what they create makes you want to head to the lake with some fireworks. Of course, you’ll bring the picnic blanket made from a Minick and Simpson design.

Flag Day by Temecula Quilt Company

I’ve wanted to make this little cutie for years. Last night I finally cranked out two little flags and I’ll be quilting them while the hubby watches golf this weekend. I think — not sure yet — I’m going to make mine into pincushions. One for me and one for a friend. It’s a very easy project to pull from the scrap pile because you only need 1″ wide strips.

Scrappy Flag Quilt Block by Diane Knott

This one isn’t a project in itself but it’s a block and up to you to decide if you are just making one or doing more. There’s also room for play. For example, if you don’t have star fabric on hand, you can make a simple star block instead. I like the light blue frame around the flag and I think it would be a fun medallion center with small hourglass blocks all around. That’s what I’m thinking I’ll try.

So, there you go, five free possibilities for the upcoming July 4th weekend. Drop me a note in the comments if you think you’ll give one a try. Or, if you are working on something else, I’d love to see what you are making.
