Get off the quilts!
This year I decided to enjoy the red and green quilts so I stacked them up on a trunk near our Christmas tree for all the world to see. I try not to be fussy about “things” with my family but was compelled to mention to the gaggle of twenty-somethings (aka, my children and their significant others) that they were to steer clear of mom’s “old” quilts. I even mentioned that some were over 150 years old and if they wanted to live to see a fraction of those years then nothing bad better befall the quilts. DS#1 was MIA and didn’t get the memo. I found him SITTING right on top of the pile, beverage in hand, holding court with the girls. It is enough to say that mom went a little nuts. See the title of this post and repeat about 10 times, quickly and loudly. After that, no one approached the quilts.
Another new project??? Yes…but. It is a guilt free project. I always wanted to attempt a tumbling blocks quilt so I did. All the fabrics are from my scrap box which is filled to the top. It is so much fun digging through the box and I’ve only scratched the surface. I plan on hand piecing and am stockpiling the pieces for a time in mid-January when I will be forced to be away from the sewing machine, with time on my hands and in need of something to take my mind off “things.” More on that later.
Taryn, I like the on point version, but I like them all turned in the same direction. I also like your tumbling blocks from your Christmas post.
Surely #1 son already knew about the value of those quilts. Kids think they are invincible, right? I'm glad you got to him before something happened. I do like your hand project. Already looking good.
Your house sounds like mine with the kids lol! I hope none of them were damaged and I am sure they got the message after that.

Those antique quilts are exquisite! I'm glad they survived the "close encounter" with your son! I hope the drink in his hand was H2o, and that would be bad enough.
How perfect to have those wonderful red and green quilts on display by the tree. Betting #1 Son will never make that mistake again!

Your comment made me laugh. I try so hard to NOT be fussy about my quilts. I let them hang on the quilt rack. I turn my back and Hubby takes them and hides them in the closet.
He told me that he does not trust anyone but the two of us.
Hi Taryn. Your new tumbling blocks project looks good. I started one early this summer. I have had lots of quilting friends dontating small scraps for me. I'm handpiecing (the english way) and have been enjoying it very much. I have just started sewing the blokcs together in rows.
Not being able to sit at the machine and "needing" hand sewing projects sounds tough…hope all is well. The tumbling blocks look great all the same…

Love the tumbling blocks in those repro fabrics, but I have to say, I get a sense of foreboding about the way you talk about needing a hand sewing project soon. Hope all is well.

I love a tumbling block quilt. I made a hand pieced one early on in my quilt making. It is what got me started on a big stash of fabrics. I wanted it to be a charm quilt so lots of shopping for fat quarters of fabric and only using a tiny corner of them.
I love your tumbling blocks. Are you going to use the paper piecing method? I made one using paper pieces and enjoyed it a lot. I really enjoy hand piecing, but really don't do very much of it. Your antique quilt are amazing!
That must have been Murphy's law that the only person not to have got the message went and sat on them and with a drink, eek. They really are an amzing collection and in the best colours too.
I'm loving the baby blocks, a true classic and a beauty.

Beautiful stack of quilts! My son compained about the flat pillow he took camping (in a tent – on the ground). The 'pillow' he grabbed was a family heirloom crazy quilt from the late 1800's – erg!

Your antique quilts are beautiful! Your post has really tempted me to start an English paper pieced hexagon quilt today. I have been trying to talk myself out of it for months now – too many projects already in the works – but maybe I will just go for it anyway!
